SINGAPORE—With the announcement of the upcoming election, the Lim family has expressed overwhelming enthusiasm for the glorious long weekend that will allow them to cross the Causeway for an extended Johor Bahru holiday.

“Wah, election timing just nice,” said Mr. Lim, 42, already scrolling through hotel deals in JB. “While other people are busy attending rallies and analysing manifestos, we’ll be researching which seafood restaurant to go for unlimited lobsters stir-fried in our favourite sauces upon ordering. A.I. is excellent for this but nothing beats word-of-mouth reviews from colleagues.”

According to sources, the family has been meticulously planning their trip ever since rumours of the election date started circulating. With polling day almost certainly falling on a Friday, the Lims are set to make full use of the government-mandated public holiday for what they describe as “the real national pastime: a JB getaway.”

“People say voting is important but so is getting a good deal on Thai hot oil massage packages,” said Mrs. Lim, 40, who has already booked back-to-back foot reflexology appointments for the whole family. “Also, the petrol is so cheap. If we pump full tank there, it’s already like getting our own government subsidy.”

Despite their excitement, the family insists they are still committed to their civic duty.

“We’ll definitely vote,” Mr. Lim assured. “Just at 8 a.m. sharp, so we can beat the checkpoint jam. By 10 a.m., I want to be eating dim sum while scrolling Facebook for election news.”

At press time, the Lims were seen running laps in the community stadium. They intend to be the first in line for ballot-casting to ensure they could leave the polling station within 30 seconds, thereby maximising their time for the booked lunch buffet.
